Drumont, Edouard

(1844-1917)
   publisher, journalist, political figure
Edouard Drumont, who was born in Paris, was a Catholic journalist and contributor to L'Univers, published by louis veuillot. Drumont attacked the powerful figures of high finance and, in particular, Jewish financiers, especially in an essay entitled France juive, essai d'histoire contemporaine (1886), which is generally considered to be the most systematic of anti-Semitic manifestos. He also founded a nationalist and anti-Semitic newspaper, La libre Parole (1892), in which he denounced, among other issues, the panama affair. This is also the theme of his work De l'or, de la boue et du sang (1896). A leading anti-Dreyfusard, Drumont served as a rightist deputy (1898-1902).
